This can be made with the white base being thick or thin yarn. 

As a size reference, Mario offered up his modeling services. He's a standard medium-haired 7 pound cat. - These rugs are absolute cat magnets. Any time I was working on this my cats would come see what was going on and then plop right on top of it to cuddle.
